- Abstract
The author discusses the need for preventing catheter-related blood infections to protect patients from preventable health-care associated infections. It is noted that catheter-related infections are the leading cause of nosocomial infection in the U.S. The fragmented response to the problem is rooted in a lack of clinical trials and cost effective analysis to guide best practices. Attempts by various governmental programs to develop a catheter protocol are addressed.
