- Abstract
This paper studies the media treatment of violence against women, from the analysis of the coverage made by Diario de Pernambuco about one case that had a big impact on Pernambuco's media and society: the story of Maria Alice Seabra. As a theoretical foundation, we work with the Discourse Analysis, with Butler's work on gender (2019) and the reflections of Sontag (2003) and Traquina (2005) about media framing on violence and conflict matters. We observed that the media usually reinforces discourses historically related to the subject of gender violence, such as the objectification of the female body, the emphasis on a mother's grieve as a discursive strategy to add more drama to the narrative and on the process of blaming women for the behavior that put them at risk.
