- Title
Common Gene Variant Linked to Obesity.
- Authors
Hampton, Tracy
- Abstract
This article reports on a large meta-analysis of research articles that has pointed to a common variant of a gene that may predispose some people to obesity. The variant was associated with only a modest increase in weight and appears to cause obesity in a population already experiencing excess weight gain. The gene was found during a search for type 2 diabetes susceptibility genes. It is suggested that this gene variant in chromosome 16 is found in over half the population. One sixth of the population has two variants which may explain why some people are heavier than others.
