- Abstract
This article discusses the cover photo of a painting by Albert Pinkham Ryder entitled "Under a Cloud." Rhyder's biographical data and artistic training are provided. He was born in New Bedford, MA and grew up with an intimate knowledge of the sea. His family moved to New York City where he studied art with William E. Marshall. Ryder was a loner who would spend most of his time alone in his two-room studio. Ryder couldn't be persuaded by friends to speed up his creative process and he likened himself to an inch worm. He completed 165 paintings over a 40-50-year career.
