- Abstract
The process of adopting Information and Communication Technologies has led to the incorporation of technological habits characterized by the routine incursion into virtual spaces that favor coexistence and socialization, as well as the training and updating of information that gives Internet users knowledge, experiences, and learning. The development of the competence of digital citizenship becomes the appropriate mechanism to carry out this process of technological adoption. In this sense, online participation maintains a close relationship with digital citizenship. The objective of this document is to understand the forms of online participation of university students. It is a qualitative study, in which a non-probabilistic convenience sample was used; formed by 106 young Peruvians belonging to the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos de Lima, Peru. The data collection method was through group interviews through an instrument of 29 open questions focused on the way in which young students express their participation during their stay on the internet. The evidence indicates that Peruvian students express their digital citizenship daily through participation in different platforms, both social and school. Finally, they emphasize how their university training has helped to change the use they give to digital media and in turn has helped them to mature in the way they communicate with other users. Regarding online participation in the university environment, the evidence indicates that Peruvian students stated that their university has given them little support in their training as digital citizens. On the other hand, regarding online participation in social circles, it was found that most of university students use ICT for leisure and entertainment purposes. Finally, in relation to online participation manifested in public affairs, they express an active participation in terms of volunteer events generated in the network.
