- Abstract
Introduction: The importance of the study on systemic conditions and periodontal diseases is since there is a causal relationship between them and to allow a better clinical approach to these patients. Objective: To assess the systemic profile of patients and associate with the periodontal diagnosis. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with secondary data of 73 patients, with mean age of 20 years, who underwent periodontal treatment at the Dental School at Federal University of Maranhão from 2014 to 2019. There were evaluated socio-demographic data (age, gender), reason for consultation, resources and frequency of oral hygiene, lifestyle habits, systemic health conditions and periodontal diagnosis. A descriptive analysis of the expressed data was performed to obtain absolute and relative numbers and proportions. The chi-square test (adherence) was used to verify the existence of a phenotypic difference between the periodontal condition of diabetic and hypertensive individuals, with a significance level of 5%. Results: The most common systemic diseases were hypertension (52.1%), followed by diabetes mellitus (26.0%). Only 4.10% of the patients reported being smoker up to 10 years (66.6%). Regarding periodontal status, 60.3% of patients were diagnosed with periodontitis, 32,8% plaque-induced gingivitis and 6.8% periodontal and gingival health. Conclusion: It is possible to assess that most patients with a diagnosis of periodontitis have shown hypertension and/or diabetes mellitus, and nonsmokers.
