- Abstract
Drug market has some specific features which distinguish it from other goods and services markets. Key differences include high level of regulation and specific buying process: the product end users - patients are not real decision makers. This role is reserved for doctors. Further specifics of prescription drug market include pricing and product itself. High expectations of patients for the newest and the most expensive technologies are faced with limited resources available in the system. This requires continuous improvement in the drug policies aimed at cost rationalization without loss of treatment quality. The aim of this article is to show some methods of expenditure rationalization in hospitals. The article is divided into four parts. The drug market in Poland is characterized in the first part, with focus on drug cost for medicals services providers. Basic economic analyses used to build drug policies and the most effective methods of hospital formularies construction are presented in parts two and three. Finally, the role of hospital staff in the pharmacotherapy management and the modern methods of the drug budget rationalization implemented by medical service providers are discussed in the last part of this article.
