- Abstract
Various explanations to the question of 'how society is understood,' that is the focus of the discussions on the theoretical basis of sociology, has been examined in this study. The stable and changing dimensions of society, and the reality in its micro and macro perspective have defined the method for understanding society in the discussions at the meta-theoretical level. The problem of understanding society is the basic question for the sociology. Is social structure the only subject of sociology or is there a need to develop a perspective that includes agency in the analysis? These sorts of questions have provided a basis for various theoretical perspectives. The dilemma between agency and structure is the foundation of different theories from structuralism to ethnomethodology. In this framework, Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann, who try to build a bridge between the micro and macro levels of society, defines society as a meta-reality that is continuously at the process between these two levels. In this study, the influences of other theoreticians on The Construction of Social Reality by Berger and Luckmann are examined and the major aspects of this theory and its shortcomings are discussed in various ways
