- Abstract
In defending itself in the Maurice Clarett case, the NFL argued that underclassmen athletes were not physically or mentally ready to compete in the NFL, thus defending their practice of limiting access to the NFL draft to players three years removed from high school. As the game has evolved, however, there are a number of college underclassmen who are deemed ready to excel in the NFL, but are forced to return to college to complete their junior seasons in order to be eligible for the NFL draft. The focus of this paper is to propose a new Early Draft Eligibility model. Here, an underclassman athlete would be eligible to enter the draft, and have the option to sign with the NFL team or return to college. The implications and limitations of the model, as well as avenues for future research are discussed.
