- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the Crippled Children’s Movement in the U.S., focusing on Alva Bunker, a disabled person from Toledo, Ohio. It notes the efforts of the Toledo Rotary Club to provide care for Bunker and comments on the founding and work of the advocacy group the International Society for Crippled Children, which later became the U.S. National Easter Seals Society. The author examines Ohio legislation concerning disability and considers the Ohio Plan, a model for providing health care and education to crippled children. Bunker's use of artificial limbs and his life as an adult are explored.
