- Abstract
The article discusses Idora Park in Youngstown, Ohio, which was an amusement park created in 1899 by the Park and Falls Street Railway Company. The cultural significance of this park and others like it in turn-of-the-century U.S. is considered. A history of Youngstown, including the dominance of the steel industry in the town, is discussed, particularly how industry in urban areas impacted the built environment. The creation of Mill Creek Park, also in Youngstown, which was established by Volney Rogers, is discussed. The effect of industrialization on the types of amusements available in such parks, including mechanical rides, and the way that the parks drew people from all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds is discussed.
