- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to show the connection between democracy as a concept and the political system and the media as influential institutions of a modern society. A modern democratic society sees the media as one of the tools for achieving and maintaining democracy. The media enable the creation of informed citizens who are able to independently make conclusions about social events and actors. An informed citizen is an important factor in building a healthy democracy. The media are the carriers of current political trends; however, they often serve the interests of certain social groups or even the state itself. This suppresses their role in expansion and development of a democratic culture, values and ideas. Freedom of the press, more precisely the freedom of information, reporting, research, development, is mostly restricted by private businesses and the state. Therefore, the media, especially those in transition countries should be liberated from their control and influence by stricter adherence to legal regulations as well as by encouraging the development of a public service media, i.e. those media that serve the public and its interests.
