- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses the history of racial categorization and the book "Passing," by Nella Larsen. The author reflects on the 1924 trial for the annulment of marriage between husband Leonard Rhinelander and wife Alice Beatrice Jones due to the mixed racial identity of the latter. Other topics include the literary depiction of racially ambiguous women, the role of the African American press in the Rhinelander trial, and visual signifiers in determining race.
