Revolutionizing Student Athletes' Success: The Transformative Impact of Sleep and the Urgent Call for Later School Start Times.
- Authors
Fong-Isariyawongse, Joanna
- Abstract
This editorial highlights the importance of sleep for student athletes and calls for policies that prioritize sleep, including delayed school start times. It emphasizes that sleep is crucial for physical recovery, cognitive function, and emotional well-being, and inadequate sleep can increase the risk of injuries and concussions. The article argues that aligning school start times with the natural sleep rhythms of adolescents can improve academic performance, mental health, and athletic abilities. The sports medicine and athletic communities are urged to advocate for these changes and educate stakeholders about the role of sleep in student athletes' health and performance.
