The article examines the role of Haute Couture, creation of exclusive fashions, as a contested space of identity and socio-political discourse. It uses qualitative textual analysis and draws on semiotic theory to explore symbolism and values in Haute Couture. It also examines socio-cultural and political semiotics of the work of Chinese couturier Guo Pei.
