- Abstract
The article discusses opposition to forest conservation in Arkansas in the 1920s and 1930s. It focuses on Ashley County, Arkansas lawyer and newspaper editor Gaston Percy George, also known as Percy George, and his booklet "The Pine Tree Menace." The author comments on the reasons behind George's opposition, citing his suspicion of collaboration between the U.S. government and the timber industry. George's support for farmers and his views on civilization and agriculture are examined. The timber company Crossett Lumber Company is also discussed.
