Interconnecting Textual Layers.
- Authors

- Abstract
The paper defines the concept of textual layers by means of two examples: A novel with successive revised editions and a Kierkegaard work with preparatory studies. Considering the layers horizontally, a vertical interconnection mechanism is introduced suggesting the term shaft for this. It is shown how an encoding with relevant tags can be done and how the shaft is consistent with the tags, furthermore, how a hypertext system could implement the shaft. It is emphasized that the practical interconnection design is a philological discipline, and that the mechanism may need to be modified for the text in question.
