- Abstract
This research study examines the performance in chemistry courses among graduates from general and technological high schools (public and private) and assesses the performance of students in chemistry courses for engineering at the Universidad Autonoma of Baja California (Mexico). Grades and student responses are collected through a questionnaire at the conclusion of six academic cycles. Data are analyzed using variance analysis, confidence intervals, and chi-squared tests. The results reveal a superior performance among graduates from general baccalaureate and private institutions. Performance disparities are related to student experience in chemistry courses during high school. The significance of laboratory activities is emphasized, given that its absence, especially in technical high schools, has a detrimental effect on academic performance at the university level. It is concluded that students least interested in chemistry have a higher risk of falling behind and have the potential of dropping out from university, underscoring the urgency of integrating technologies and active teaching methodologies into education.
