- Abstract
This article discusses the lapses of the mining industry which was associated to the coal mine explosion at Upper Big Branch (UBB) mine in Montcoal, West Virginia. It explores the various enactment of coal mining legislation such as the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. The enacted legislation intends to protect coal miners from accidents in the coal mining industry. However, most of the mining companies refuse to comply with the policies stipulated in the legislation as this affects the profitability of the firm. The mine explosion at UBB could have been prevented if the legislation were followed.
