- Abstract
Robert Lepage's 1998 film Nô, set in the cities of Osaka and Montreal in October 1970, pays a rather unusual homage to Alain Resnais's Hiroshima mon amour. While critics have been quick to identify this intertextual allusion, until now very little attention has been paid to examining exactly how, why, and to what effect Nô is constructed in dialogue with Resnais's classic film. For the Québécois film and stage director does not simply borrow an exotic locale in which to set his story about the October Crisis. In fact we see here that Hiroshima mon amour serves as a supple narrative device that enables Lepage to broach the thorny questions of Québécois history and collective memory.
