- Abstract
This article focuses on the writings of French author Alexis de Tocqueville on the social conditions of Native Americans in North America during the 19th century. Topics discussed include his original mission to travel, along with writer Gustave de Beaumont, in order to examine prisons in the U.S., his travels throughout the U.S. and Lower Canada (includes much of modern-day Québec), and his fascination with the adventure novels of James Fenimore Cooper, who wrote about the interaction between Europeans and Native Americans.
