- Abstract
The article presents a profile of Cemâl el-Halvetî a sufi saint of the Ottoman period in Turkey and discusses the challenges faced by historians while studying the historical origin of the Halvetî order. It is stated that his grandfather Cemâl al-Dîn Aksarayî was a descendant from the line of scholars reaching back to the notable Muslim intellectual Fakhr al-Dîn Râ zî It is reported that his descendants were among the numerous Muslim notables who fled from the Mongol invasions of the eastern half of the Islamic world during the 13th century. Historians state that the didactic character of the hagiographical sources of Halvetî order posses a major challenge in the study of the origin of the Halvetî order.
