- Authors
Morton, Barry
- Abstract
The article discusses Tswana oral tradition, contesting ideas presented in the book "Of Revelation and Revolution," by Jean Comaroff and John Comaroff. It examines the oral traditions of neighboring African peoples and notes the importance of ancestors, or badimo, to the Tswana. The author comments on a myth called the Lowe myth regarding Tswana origins and reflects on historical traditions concerning the split of the Batawana and Bamangwato peoples around 1795. The connection between oral traditions and collective identity is considered.
