- Title
"Yet a little while and the world will see me no more" (John 14:19): Biblical Language and References in the Testament of Patriarch Josyf.
- Authors
Onuferko, Andrew T.
- Abstract
The article looks at Biblical references in the "Testament," an address authored by Patriarch Josyf Slipyj of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. According to the author, Slipyj chose to reference those texts which would be the most familiar to his audience and which would be used in homilies for Sundays and fesat days. It is also suggested that Slipyj chose texts that he found personally meaningful and that he believed conferred strength on listeners and readers. Details on the relationship between the references and Slipyj's personal experiences as a scholar, bishop, and Christian witness are presented. Political attitudes towards Catholicism in the Soviet Union are also discussed.
