- Abstract
Richard Francis Burton (1820-1890) was one of the most controversial figures of the imperial British action in the 19th century. Known as the translator of One Thousand and One Nights and the Kama-Sutra, the openness he showed towards Islam, put it at odds with the British, moral and religious, principles of his time. This conduct illustrated his thought: managing to support British Empire while he opposes criticizes. According to Burton, imperialism was a natural and inevitable caracteristic in interactions between states and felts, but he didn't tolerate the British propensity to justify its conquests by the assertion of a moral superiority.
