- Title
MARGINALIA - A SMALL PEEK INTO OTTOMAN MINDS.
- Authors
Goodrich, Thomas D.
- Abstract
This article presents English translations of the marginalia written on an Ottoman manuscript copied circa 1600 of "Târih-i Hind-i Garbî veya Hadîs-i Nev" (A History of the Discovery of America) found at the library of Topkapι Saray and catalogued as No. 1488 of the the Revan Collection. The author identified that the manuscript had thirteen writers of marginalia based on a handwriting analysis. He feels that four of them are notable Ottoman scholars: Kâtib Çelebi, Ebu Bekir b. Behram ed-Dimişkî, and Eflâki Mustafa Efendi, Bahaî Mehmet Efendi. Some of the notable European explorers discussed in the marginalia include Fernando Cortes, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, and Christopher Columbus.
