- Title
Talking with Ghosts: Ben Jonson and the English Civil War.
- Authors
DONALDSON, IAN
- Abstract
The article argues that the prospect of the English civil of the 1640s was clearly imagined in playwright Ben Jonson's works, particularly in the tragedy "Catiline His Conspiracy." The author believes that this play explores the way writings and events from one period of time may return to inspire or haunt the people of another. He also suggests that the popularity of the play may be attributed to its central themes of rebellion, the imperiling of the commonwealth, citizens' duties and conspiracy.
