- Authors
Scott, Grant F
- Abstract
The article discussed the 1876 edition of the illustrated book "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, illustrated by Gustave Doré. The author explores Doré's use of Christian symbology, homoeroticism, the sublime, and Romaniticism in his engravings. The influence of the painting "Raft of the Medusa" by Theodore Géricault upon Doré's illustrations is considered. Dore's illustrations are compared to two other editions of the Ancient Mariner, the 1837 edition illustrated by David Scott and the 1946 edition illustrated by Alexander Calder.
