- Abstract
We present the partial results of a project of the Archaeology Committee of the Panamerican Institute of Geography and History. The proposed work consists of revising the theoretical concepts used in the analysis of American sociocultural processes, taking into account the study of specific cases. The first theme examined is the diversity of the production systems of later American societies. The theme is common to all societies throughout the continent and we can compare how the groups solved their subsistence challenges in the various environments. We are calling "later societies" in each region, those present just before contact with European. The present article focuses on specific archaeological data from south of São Paulo's coast, but considers the general characteristics common to all of the Brazilian coast.
