- Abstract
Thrombolysin infusion was used on 10 occasions in 6 patients with clotted arteriovenous cannulae, when routine measures for declotting were unsuccessful. Successful restoration of flow, verified by hemodynamic and angiographic data, was achieved in all but one instance. In the single case in which Thrombolysin infusion failed, the arterial stenosis was found to be caused by intimal proliferation at the cannula tip. No side effects were noted from the Thrombolysin in the dosage used. After successful declotting, all patients were maintained on long-term anticoagulant therapy. Cannula patency was maintained for as long as 36 weeks after Thrombolysin infusion. Expanded use of thrombolytic therapy might well reduce the necessity for revision of the venous limb of the Quinton-Scribner shunt.
