How Federal Tax Dollars Meant to Fight Climate Change Could End Up Boosting Louisiana's Fossil Fuel Production.
- Authors
RANDOLPH, NED
- Abstract
Billions of federal tax dollars are being allocated to Louisiana to combat climate change, but there is concern that these projects may actually increase fossil fuel production. The projects involve capturing and burying carbon dioxide emissions from oil and gas facilities, which can receive generous tax subsidies. Louisiana has the authority to approve as many of these projects as it wants, and the state has a history of using disasters to boost the fossil fuel industry. Critics argue that this focus on carbon capture diverts resources from renewable energy development and raises environmental concerns.
