- Title
RETURN OF AN HISTORICAL THREAT TO THE ENDANGERED ABBOTT'S BOOBY PAPASULA ABBOTTI?
- Authors
HENNICKE, JANOS C.
- Abstract
The article focuses on an incidence of harvest of an Abbott's Booby Papasula Abbotti. The declining population on Christmas Island of one of the most threatened and least known seabirds is presented wherein postulated causes include chicks being negatively affected by the Yellow Crazy Ants Anoplolepis gracilipes, prey shortage, and drowning in fishing gear. A male Abbott's Booby with a plastic line found on its left tarsus is discussed wherein the method of tethering gave indications that the bird has been previously captured and kept as a pet. Harvest as the major reason of the species' near-extirpation in the 1920s and the perceived threat it still poses on the small and declining Abbott's Booby population are explored.
