- Abstract
This article presents the work of Eduard Seler (1849-1922), a pioneer in the study of the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica, with a focus on his research methodology and his extensive collecting and documentation activities, that become visible in the unpublished graphic and written materials from the legacy of Seler and his student Walter Lehmann held at the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (Ibero-American Institute, IAI) in Berlin. The authors provide examples of Seler's work, point out the important activities of his wife Caecilie Seler-Sachs and trace the path of the archives after Eduard Seler's death.
