The article examines the uses of photons in quantum information science. Topics discussed include the applications of quantum information science, the various ways of physically expressing qubits from which quantum information is based and the advantages of using photons in physically expressing qubits compared with electron spins, nuclear spins and superconducting coherent devices. Also discussed is the development of functional photonic quantum circuits and quantum metrology.
