- Title
Communicating and Playing»Independence«: The Role of Antis in the Lithuanian Singing Revolution.
- Authors
Martinelli, Dario
- Abstract
The article focuses on the Lithuanian postmodernist band Antis, and their musical and political contribution to the Lithuanian independence movement in the late 1980s (the so-called»Singing Revolution «). The analysis will include both aesthetic and sociological aspects. In the first case, there will be a focus on the songwriting processes (lyrics and music) and on production and performance aspects. In the second case, the article will share some socio-cultural insights into the activities of the band, all against the background of the phenomenon of the Singing Revolution. In the concluding section, some remarks will be also offered on the way the Singing Revolution is contextualized and handled at the level of both international and Lithuanian social and cultural policies, with particular reference to the factors which have contributed to its being a little known phenomenon internationally and a not-too-well valorized heritage nationally.
