- Abstract
The article reviews various studies regarding diastolic heart failure. It shows that diastolic is common and is responsible for a large proportion of society's health care costs, in which female sex, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation are some of the factors often found to be associated with the development of the disease. Randomized trials were conducted to test several pharmacologic therapies for diastolic, including angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin-receptor blockers, and digoxin, and show no improvement in survival rates. It is also discovered that the rate of hospital admissions due to heart failure was reduced with the use of angiotensin-receptor blockers; however it is associated with an increased risk of hypotension, renal failure and hyperkalemia.
