- Abstract
Over the past decade a significant body of literature has been published in peer-reviewed journals that describe the outcomes of studies, projects and initiatives that addressed breast health and breast cancer control among African American women. These reports have contributed much knowledge and insight relative to breast health, breast cancer detection, breast cancer control, and breast cancer survival among African American women. However, little is know about the scope, quality and potential impact of these efforts relative to reducing the excess breast cancer morbidity and mortality experienced by African American women. This report presents the results of a comprehensive review, analysis and critique of reports of outcomes of nursing research that addressed breast cancer among African American women published in journals providing a forum for the dissemination of nursing research findings. The results of the review, analysis and critique revealed that this body of nursing research provides the profession with a broad base of knowledge and insight about the attitudes, beliefs and perceptions of African American women relative to breast cancer, breast cancer screening and breast cancer control; utilization of breast care services among African American women; breast cancer screening and breast care behaviors of African American women; and, the lived experiences of African American breast cancer survivors. The same is true of insights and information gleaned relative to the design and evaluation of instruments and interventions targeted for use among African American women. However, several gaps and limitations within this body of nursing research were also revealed.
