- Title
Who (Really) Owns the Past?
- Authors
Meyer, Karl E.
- Abstract
The article examines the predicaments concerning the ownership of antiquities and art treasures. It cites the provisions of the 1970 United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. The British system allows the sharing of treasures between the finder and the state. There should be a permit distinction between exhibiting ancient human remains and additional skeletons.
