- Title
UK Lords dismiss arsenic poisoning case.
- Authors
Arnstein, Ellen
- Abstract
The article reports that the British House of Lords has dismissed the negligence suit filed against the British Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) because of two Bangladeshi men who argued that they developed arsenic poisoning because the British Geological Survey (BGS) neglected to test for the contaminant in tubewells dug during the 1980s. The British Overseas Development Office in collaboration with the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corp. and the BGS provided Bangladesh with 4000 tubewells in 1980 where BGS was used to check how effectively the wells were operating, the hydrochemistry of the water, the aluminum and iron content of the water. NERC CEO Alan Thorpe defended that testing for arsenic was never within the bounds of their study.
