- Abstract
The article focuses on a new system of steel-lined water intake shafts at the coal-fired Navajo Generating Station (NGS) in Page, Arizona. The coal-fired power plant draws cooling water from Lake Powell through the submersible pumps in five inclined shafts. The new cooling water intake system was needed to allow uninterrupted plant operation. The development of the system by the plant's managing owner Salt River Project (SRP) and consultant Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) is tackled. The challenges faced in the design and drilling processes are detailed.
