- Abstract
The article discusses a study that examines the development of socio pragmatic skills among eleven migrants in New Zealand from China, Taiwan, Russia and the Philippines, with minimum English language proficiency of International English Language Testing System (IELTs). The researchers used discourse completion tasks (DCTs) and oral interviews as research instruments. They analyzed different data from the classroom context as well as the authentic interactions from workplaces willing to offer temporary internship placements to professional migrants. It revealed that migrants have the ability to accurately analyze and negotiate requests and suggested teachability of sociopragmatic competence.
