The article discusses how Mark Twain treats the book "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" where he lavishes on the devout Joan whom he characterizes as a child instead of as an adult while he alludes to Sunday school books as full of incendiary religious matter about hell-fire and brimstone. Topics discussed include Twain's establishment of Joan's subversion of behavioral norms and his presentation of his ideal child and ideal human Joan.
