- Abstract
The smart city agenda has increasingly occupied the public and private debate about supposedly more sustainable urban models. The article aims at proposing a critical discussion about smart urban models, based on theoretical contributions of science, technology and society (STS) studies. The objective is to analyze the narrative about smart city based on the interpretation given to technology. This is done by considering two interpretive approaches: the first that focuses only on the relationship between science and technology and the second that includes society as a determining element in this relationship. As a result, we show how we can observe in the smart agenda a technological vision marked by determinism and neutrality. At the same time, we suggest a sociotechnical approach that, considering the functionality between technology and society, can highlight social implications and agencies in the smart city.
