- Abstract
The fact that Turkey is a foreign-dependent country in terms of lack of resources in the field of energy shows the importance of the support to be given to renewable energy both economically and environmentally. It is planned that the public financial policies to be formed as a support will reduce the foreign dependency in this area and increase the alternative renewable energy resources, especially solar, wind, hydraulic energy, geothermal energy, which Turkey has geographical and climatic potential. For this reason, in this study, whether the public policies applied on renewable energy are effective in increasing technological innovation in the field of energy by establishing a relationship between innovation and energy, was examined using panel data analysis method for the 2000-2019 period of European Union countries and Turkey. In the model, the number of patents, which is considered as an indicator of technological innovation, as the dependent variable, the dummy variable for public policies in the field of renewable energy, and the annual growth (%) and the values of Research and Development (R&D) expenditures (%) in national income are used as the control variable. Within the framework of the findings, a positive and statistically significant effect on the number of patents for the public policies dummy variable and the R&D variable, and a statistically significant but negative effect for the annual growth variable. According to the results of the analysis, it can be said that the continuity of public policies on renewable energy will help increase technological innovation.
