- Abstract
Sustainable development has become a more remarkable and emphasized issue with the increasing environmental damage. The need to maintain a balance between the environment and the economy forms the basis of the understanding of sustainability. With the rapid increase in population, the increase in demand for agricultural products has accelerated the emergence of new production models. These new production models have become the focus of sustainable development. While such positive changes and developments are taking place in the world, countries rapid consumption of natural resources and damage to ecological balance represent a negative trend. Although it is a little late to understand this bad course, countries have agreed that raw materials are running out and this strategy should be abandoned. The fact that renewable resources add a positive value to the country's economy and do not harm the nature increases their preferability. The concept of bioeconomy has begun to gain importance and be adopted at this point. This term, which advocates a knowledge based economy, has brought biotechnological applications to the agenda. Thanks to these new applications, the sustainable management of biological resources and the competitiveness of the agricultural sector have been increased. In this study, the importance of the concept of bioeconomy and its application areas have been tried to be emphasized by looking at Turkey's sustainable development activities from an agricultural perspective. It has been concluded that bioeconomic activities in Turkey can become more functional in the field of agriculture the implemented in this direction are insufficient and their scope should be expanded.
