- Abstract
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide among men and the second one among women. The progressive increase of lung cancer incidence among women (due particularly to the smoking spread in female population in the last decades) along with the fact that women are diagnosed at increasingly younger age than men, being frequently never smokers, led to deepen investigations about gender differences in this context. Sex-related factors such as genetic predisposition, sex hormones and specific genetic alterations, along with epidemiologic and clinical factors, were evaluated. This review focuses on epidemiology and etiopathogenesis of lung cancer in women and analyses gender distinctions, underlying different clinical presentation and treatment response, in both sex.
