- Abstract
Snails and slugs belong to the Phylum Mollusca, Class Grastropoda and the Order Pulmonata. These pests have caused damage to several crops in Brazil. However, until recently there was no product registered in the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) to control these pests. The only product, until now, that presented satisfactory control of these molluscs in farms is a bait based on the active ingredient metaldehyde. However, this molluscicide is not registered for agricultural use, but only for domestic use, as well as presenting risks of contamination of domestic and wild animals. Producers, desperate to see their crops being destroyed by these pests, buy the active ingredient metaldehyde and apply it to their crops. Therefore, state inspection bodies have frequently carried out inspections on farms and imposed fines on producers and technicians who recommended such products. This review addresses bioecological aspects, damage and mainly management of these pests in the main agricultural crops, clarifying to producers, especially soybeans, that there are effective products to control these molluscs, which are registered in the MAPA. With this, it is believed that it is possible to safely and legally manage these pests in crops, without the occurrence of contamination of fauna and the environment.
