- Abstract
In this study, the main arguments of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's political theory affecting the modernization process of the republic will be discussed based on his work The Contrat Social. In this context, Rousseau's thoughts about political philosophy will be revealed by associating with the idea of republicanism. Rousseau, an 18th-century romantic thinker and writer, guided the Age of Enlightenment and republican thought with his moral, social and political thoughts. When we look at Rousseau's works, we see that his main starting point in the context of the path to political theory is his determinations and examinations of what a person is. At this point, Rousseau states that the human self is more inclined to emotions than reason. In this context, Rousseau examined his period from a critical point of view and examined the possibilities of the social structure that should be in order for an egalitarian and free society to be formed based on the phenomenon of 'man'. Based on this, it can be said that Rousseau's main concern in his work The Social Contract is to reveal the rational principles and justifications of a good and fair government. The concept of 'general will' in Rousseau's work is at the center of his political theory as an original concept. At the same time, Rousseau also built the elements that will establish republicanism in the modern sense on the basis of this concept. According to him, 'general will' is the basic tool and founding element of the social contract, as it is the concept that will solve this fundamental problem of man, whose freedom and equality are lost in the state of nature.
