- Title
A "Nomen Sacrum" in the Sardis Synagogue.
- Authors
Edwards, James R.
- Abstract
This article presents an exploration into the presence of a nomen sacrum within the decorations of the Jewish synagogue of Sardis, Turkey. Details are given identifying the nomen sacrum, or abbreviation of a sacred name, within the wall inscriptions of the building. Comments are provided highlighting the practice of nomen sacra by Christians but not within Judaism. It is suggested that the pluralistic and tolerant social dynamics of Sardis allowed Jewish-Christian influence.
