- Abstract
This article assesses the imagery of the Day of Atonement and the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ during the period of Hebrews 9:6-10. The Day of Atonement, as parable with its three constituent antitheses, provides the arguments for the superiority of the new age and the high-priestly ministry of Jesus Christ described in 9:11 and 10:18. Jesus' sacrifice is superior than that of animals because his blood purifies the flesh and conscience. It is the volitional nature of Jesus' sacrifice that cleanses the conscience of man.
